Conference Introduction
Environmental risks today have become a serious challenge across most regions of the world. Climate change, on the one hand, and unsustainable human activities, on the other, present continuous threats to livelihoods. Among the most pressing concerns is the reduction of water resources, as rivers and streams diminish, the volume of lakes and reservoirs declines, and groundwater levels drop. This issue is considered one of the most critical environmental threats, with far-reaching consequences for human activity. Despite technological advances, it continues to affect economic, social, environmental, and even public health sectors. Within this context, the Kurdistan Region in general, and the Garmian area in particular, are facing numerous environmental challenges, most notably water lack. This has led to reductions in vegetation cover, increased desertification, and declining agricultural productivity, which in turn drive migration from rural communities.
As a result, many countries around the world have begun organizing scientific conferences dedicated to environmental risks and strategies for their effective management. For this reason, the idea of holding a conference on environmental risks in the Garmian region and their management has been proposed. The conference will open a scientific platform for writers and researchers in the fields of environment and environmental risks, with the aim of suggesting solutions to the pressing environmental challenges currently facing the region.
Conference Vision
The conference on “Environmental Risks in the Garmian Region and Their Management” seeks to become a pioneering scientific platform at the local and regional levels, focusing on identifying and addressing environmental crises, particularly the water crisis, from an integrated geographical perspective. It supports the production of applied knowledge with the aim of building a sustainable and healthy environment for present and future generations.
Conference Objectives
-Highlighting the environmental risks in Garmian region in general, and the issue of water resource lack in particular, in order to identify suitable solutions.
-Presenting the potential of advanced programs and technologies, such as Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing, in monitoring and assessing environmental risks.
-Shedding light on the human and demographic dimensions of environmental risk management, by examining the relationship between population growth, migration, and unsustainable use of natural resources.
-Sharing local and international experiences and expertise i

The beginning of the establishment of Garmian University goes back to the transfer of the Colleges of Education (opened in 2004) and Basic Education (opened in 2008) in Kalar, and the Colleges of Language and Humanities (opened in 2004) and Physical Education and Sports Sciences (opened in 2006) in Khanaqin. These colleges were initially part of the University of Sulaimani but later were integrated into the University of Garmian in 2011.
This university has seen significant growth in a certain period, for this purpose, several new colleges and departments have been established which are: (the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences) in Kifri, (the College of Science) and (the College of Medicine) in Kalar, (College of Computer and Information Technology) in Khanaqin addition to the (Department of Civil Engineering) and (Department of Law) in Kalar which were established as two independent scientific departments in our university.
Currently, our university consists of: -
- 8 Colleges.

This success was followed by the opening of Higher Diplomas, additional Master’s programs, and PhD programs in other scientific disciplines. Hundreds of students have since benefitted from these offers, with the educational opportunities expanding annually. Currently, the university hosts 200 students enrolled in higher diploma, master’s, and doctoral programs.
